Baltimore: College Town USA

What makes Baltimore “College Town USA?”

Baltimore is home to a great many colleges, earning it the nickname “College Town USA.” There are upwards of 25 colleges located in the Baltimore Metropolitan Area. Among these are some of the most well-known and prestigious institutions in the country.

John’s Hopkins University in Baltimore

Johns Hopkins University is one of the most widely celebrated medical schools in the nation. They have received countless awards for their work in the medical field through their innovation and dedication to excellence. This prestigious university is located downtown in a small college neighborhood called Charles Village.  Students have access to hip, affordable, and walkable shops, bars and restaurants. The university continues to expand its college town; Hopkins recently opened the doors to Charles Commons, a 618-bed residence hall complex that boasts a 29,000-square-foot full-service Barnes & Noble on its street level. One block south on St. Paul Street developer Struever Bros. Eccles & Rouse is developing two other projects, Olmstead and Village Lofts, that will add 177 condominiums, 27,500 square feet of restaurant and retail space, and a 395-space public parking garage.

University of Maryland Baltimore County

Though perhaps not as well-known, UMBC is a highly respected institution of learning. The campus is situated in Catonsville and conveniently located only 15 minutes from downtown Baltimore. UMBC is among the top 3 universities in the U.S. in the production of IT degrees, according to the National Science Foundation. The Research and Technology Park located on campus is home to over 55 technology companies and research institutions including Observation Baltimore, U.S. Geological Survey, NASA/Joint Center for Earth Systems Technology, Allegis, and RMF Engineering.

What makes College Town USA so special?

One of the most wonderful things about living and working in a college town like Baltimore is that you often find yourself surrounded by young people who have a passion for the future of their city and its community members. These are the doctors, lawyers, artists, and thinkers of tomorrow and they are all around us. These young professionals are eager to share their passions and knowledge, and we can all reap the benefits of that.
